
The new U.S.S. Enterprise-D and its crew set out "to boldly go where no one has gone before." Their first mission of the Galaxy-class starship U.S.S. Enterprise-D is to explore the mystery surrounding the creation of the Farpoint Station located on planet Deneb IV. While trying to negotiate a friendly agreement for Starfleet to use this energy-powered base, Captain Picard and his crew also attempt to discover how the Bandi inhabitants of Deneb IV built the station.

Counselor Troi senses pain, loneliness and despair, all without sensing the Groppler, or any of his people, but something very near to them.
Commander Riker looks for Data.
Captain Picard gives Wesley a look around the bridge and lets him try out the Captain's chair.

Q tells Captain Picard that his actions are typical and that "savage lifeforms never follow even their own rules."
Commander Riker and Data find Groppler and ask what he's referring to when saying "Make it stop! You can drive it away!"

The away team (Data, Tasha, Troi and Riker) prepares to energize.
Q takes a seat in the Captain's chair as Captain Picard explains to Q that his people are in trouble and he wants to help them.
The away team and Zorn appear on the Bridge as soon as Captain Picard tells Q he'll do whatever he asks of him.
Q listens as Captain Picard theorizes why Groppler was being punished.
The crew looks to the viewer as the alien vessel transforms itself.
