And so it will begin on January 17, 2012. Star Trek Online, the popular MMORPG game from Cryptic, will officially become a free-to-play title on that fast-approaching date. As the game makes the shift to F2P, look for the stakes and rewards to be higher, high-end things tougher to amass and a game-changing addition/currency within the system... Dilithium.

A certain voice should sound very, very familiar as it recounts a failed mission to save the Romulan homeworld and reveals what ensued thereafter: the deaths of countless billions, the ends of worlds and a war to end all wars involving the Klingons, Romulans, Borg, Dominion, Federation and more. To quote that voice, "The fate of the galaxy rests in your hands." As reported on StarTrek.com in September, players can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost and without having first bought a retail copy or subscription. Everyone can choose from Star Trek Online’s many features, which range from traversing the game’s unique galaxy to customizing crews, ships and avatars to weekly new episodes in which to play. A features matrix, FAQ, overview and assorted forums have been developed on the official Star Trek Online website to fill in the details of free-to-play for existing and new users. To learn more about Star Trek Online free-to-play, click HERE
