Clangers is boldly going to the final frontier. The upcoming Sprout reboot of Oliver Postgate's Clangers has tapped Star Trek's legendary Captain Kirk, William Shatner, to serve as the Narrator. Actually, Shatner and Monty Python's Michael Palin will both serve as the Narrator, with Shatner's voice heard in the American edition and Palin's in the UK version. Postage, who passed away in 2008, created the original series and was its Narrator.
Sprout, billed as the first 24 hour pre-school network, will launch Clangers in June. The show will be a contemporized version of the popular stop-motion children's program about a family of imaginary, mouse-like pink creatures -- with very long noses -- that live in and on a small blue planet out in deep space and speak via their unusual Clanger whistling.
"When we began working on Clangers, we knew that we needed to find a narrator for the show who could connect with multiple generations of parents and kids," said Sprout President Sandy Wax. "William Shatner's highly recognizable voice and humor captures the distinct charm of the show while bringing his own unique sensibility to the role of the Narrator."
