StarTrek.com is saddened to report the passing of veteran film and television director Joseph Sargent, who passed away on December 22 at the age of 89, succumbing to complications of heart disease, according to the trade paper Variety. A four-time Emmy Award winner, Sargent's many credits included "The Corbomite Maneuver" episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, as well as Lassie, Gunsmoke, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Terrible Joe Moran, Jaws: The Revenge, Skylark, Miss Evers' Boys, Something the Lord Made and his last effort, 2008's Sweet Nothing in My Ear, one of the many Hallmark Hall of Fame productions he realized for television.

The director was born Giusseppe Daneiele Sorgente in Jersey City, New Jersey. He is survived by his widow, Carolyn Nelson Sargent, who played Yeoman Atkins in the TOS episode "The Deadly Years," as well as two daughters, Lia Sargent and Athena Sargent Sergneri, from a previous marriage to Mary Carver.
