In three days, my latest Star Trek: Voyager novel, Protectors will be officially released. If you pre-ordered it, the wait is almost over. If you haven’t, it’s possible that some stores may already have it on their shelves now.
Longtime readers know that the status of the fleet sent back to the Delta Quadrant in Full Circle no longer quo. Some have expressed concerns that the intention of The Eternal Tide was to re-set the Voyager stage, returning it to a format similar to what we saw during the run of the television series.
If you think you know where we’re going next, or which characters we will continue to follow, think again. The story of the Federation Starship Voyager, alone in the Delta Quadrant searching for a way home has already been told.
The story of the Full Circle Fleet has just begun.
Captain Chakotay knows that for the fleet’s explorations to continue, he’s going to have to demonstrate to Command that despite heavy losses, their original mission remains vital to Starfleet’s interests. He pins his hopes on a distress call Voyager received nine years earlier, but was unable to answer. Voyager and Demeter journey thousands of light years beyond any territory charted in the Delta Quadrant, by the Federation or the Borg. The alien technology they discover is mysterious and dangerous, and Chakotay butts heads from the start with Demeter’s captain, Commander Liam O’Donnell. Their investigation yields unexpected results, some, beautiful, some, horrifying. Their quest to save a dying world will lead them to place they could never have imagined, introduce them to a civilization as powerful as their own, and set the stage for an untimely reunion with several species Chakotay sincerely hoped to never encounter again.
A remote Starbase in the Beta Quadrant has recovered a single survivor from a vessel they have identified as Caeliar. The Doctor, Voyager’s former EMH, is brought in to confirm this, and learns a great deal more than the true identity of patient “C-1.” While the fleet has been exploring the Delta Quadrant, a new plague has arisen closer to home; one that appears to have been caused by Caeliar catoms. Unless a cure can be found, the body count of sixty-three billion the Borg left in their wake is going to grow. Starfleet believes they already have the best minds in the Federation working to find that cure. They don’t. Nor do they understand the true nature of the threat they are facing.
Protectors is the first installment in a trilogy of Voyager books, the finale of which will coincide with the twentieth anniversary of Voyager’s launch. The second in the series is Acts of Contrition. The title of the third has not yet been released. When these stories have been told, all of the questions that have remained unaddressed since the fleet’s new mission began will be answered. Our heroes will confront old enemies, be forced to work with new friends they cannot trust, and learn just how difficult it can be, in the face of their staggering and painful losses, to maintain the values and principles that have always guided them in the past.
What will never change is their determination to overcome even the most daunting challenges, and the spirit of exploration and discovery that has always been at the heart of Star Trek: Voyager.
