Some of Gary Hutzel's closest friends and associates -- among them Doug Drexler, Mike Gibson, David Takemura, Glenn Neufeld, and Dorothy Duder -- and many of his fans are joining forces to support the Gary Hutzel Memorial Fund, a campaign that's underway now on Hutzel, who served as visual effects coordinator and supervisor on the first five seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the entire run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, died suddenly on March 1. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds to cover a variety of expenses that includes mortuary fees and memorial services both in Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Here's the open letter from Drexler, Gibson, Takemura, Neufeld and Duder:

Dear Friends:

The passing of our beloved and respected colleague, Gary Hutzel, has left us all in a state of shock.  It's an enormous emotional wound that only time will heal.

The production which Gary was working on has graciously taken care of the family's travel expenses for his journey home. However, there are many additional expenses, such as mortuary fees and memorial services (both in Vancouver and Los Angeles).

We, as Gary's extended family, are stepping in to help the family cover these costs.

All donations are welcome and will help close the gap financially for Cathy Hutzel and her family.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and compassion.

With love,

Doug Drexler, Mike Gibson, David Takemura, Glenn Neufeld and Dorothy Duder
