Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas only just took place in August, but already co-CEOs Gary Berman and Adam Malin have their sights set on making the 2013 event in Las Vegas even bigger and better. In fact, 24 guests are already booked, including William Shatner, Kate Mulgrew and Avery Brooks, as well as Catherine Hicks, Michael Berryman and Chris Sarandon, and Gold Tickets are on sale right now. StarTrek.com recently checked in with Berman, who recapped the 2012 event, previewed the 2013 event and revealed how fan reaction to the 2012 convention will pay off for the 2013 gathering.
Berman: The 2012 Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas was a tremendous success and we thank everyone who spent their vacations with us. We really appreciate the wonderful feedback from attendees and are grateful as well to the 70-plus celebrities that made the weekend so outstanding. Out of all the conventions we've done over the past 40 years, the Vegas Star Trek show is far and away the most complicated to produce and the most gratifying when it turns out so well. It's hard to top each year, but we're going all out in 2013 to deliver our best one yet. With the release of the next feature film before the convention, we expect energy and enthusiasm to be at an all-time high, and that adds to the overall excitement of the show.
What did you learn this year that you’ll apply to next year’s convention?
Berman: We had a lot of fun and great audience response for the appearances of actors like Ben Vereen and Virginia Madsen, who were guest stars in the Star Trek franchise, but are much better known for their other work. With that in mind, one of our goals for 2013 Vegas is to continue in this vein. We already have booked Mark Sheppard, who is in virtually every genre show; Michael Berryman, best known for his horror film work; Catherine Hicks, from 7th Heaven and Child's Play; and Chris Sarandon from Fright Night, The Princess Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas. We are working on some other folks that are sure to be huge hits at the show, new to Star Trek convention appearances, and surprises for our attendees.
One of the things that fans really loved the past couple of years was the opportunity to meet the celebrities one-on-one in the vendors’ room and to get their autographs directly. We are continuing that tradition in 2013, and it really adds to the excitement of the vendors’ room. It really was incredible in 2012 to see the entire cast of TNG -- other than Sir Patrick Stewart, who was at the London Olympics -- sitting together meeting attendees. We (also) had a lot of positive feedback about our secondary theater and the programming and guests that filled the schedule there throughout the four days. We will continue to focus on this track and appreciate the fact that attendees take the time to visit this area of the convention as well as the main theater.
Anything else you’re shooting for at the 2013 convention?
Berman: One of the areas we are going to work on for 2013 is trying to get The Rio's existing shops and restaurants to theme out a bit for our group and/or have some special offers for Trekkers. It is a surprising challenge, but we'll give it a renewed try.
Who else, in terms of Trek guests, do you have lined up as of today?
Berman: We have 24 Star Trek celebrities already signed up for 2013 and we're working towards breaking this year's roster, which topped 70 stars. Our dream guest would be Whoopi Goldberg and we'll invite her again -- as we have for the past 11 years. Three captains -- Shatner, Mulgrew and Brooks -- are already aboard, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, we are inviting everyone we can that was involved in the series. We know that a lot of our audience really treasures DS9, as we do, and we want to give it the recognition it deserves for being so amazing in storytelling, production and acting.
