It’s about time. Alex Ross, one of the world’s top comic book artists, who has painted covers for Marvel and DC, is about to make his first foray into the Star Trek universe – and he’ll do so in an inventive, unexpected way. Ross has created the box art for Polar Lights/Round 2’s upcoming 1:350 scale Star Trek: The Original Series U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701 model kit.

“I’m a big fan of the original Star Trek series, and this was the perfect opportunity to do an illustration of the icons of the show,” Ross said. “It’s a great challenge for me to work with the likenesses of such well-known figures as Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley.”
Upon completion, the Enterprise 1:350 scale-model kit will reach 30”-plus long, and will be accurately detailed to reflect the 11’ TOS filming model. According to Polar Lights, they sought an artist whose work would match the accuracy of the model kit, and they found that artist in Ross. “Alex Ross’ painting has the kind of attention to detail that lends itself perfectly to the Star Trek franchise,” said Jamie Hood, Polar Lights’ brand manager. “His realistic style of artwork reflects the level of quality that we are trying to attain with this kit. The art looks like it has jumped straight off the screen. We’re thrilled to have the chance to work with Alex on this project and we think he’s the perfect man for the job.”
The Enterprise NCC-1701 kit will be available in two editions, a standard edition and a Premiere Edition. The standard edition will be available through hobby and specialty stores, while the Premiere Edition kit will be limited to 1,701 pieces and include additional parts and commemorative packaging. Anyone who purchases a Premiere Edition kit will be granted access to the 1701 Club, through which they can receive exclusive development updates by email.
Both kits will be available during the fourth quarter of 2012. Keep an eye on StarTrek.com for additional news and First Look photos.
