Season 2 of
Star Trek was — to put it in the vernacular of the time — pretty darned groovy. What this season had that the third and final season did not was the retention of many of the creative forces from the first season, notably
Dorothy "D.C." Fontana. Sure, there were some strange scripts pulled from the pile of original scripts for the show ("
The Omega Glory"), but it had three of the funniest shows produced in the entire series run ("
The Trouble with Tribbles," "
I, Mudd" and "
A Piece of the Action"), along with some plain old fashion classic
Trek episodes ("
Mirror, Mirror," "
Patterns of Force," "
Wolf in the Fold").
Perhaps the highlight of this season was the expansion of Spock's backstory, with both "Amok Time" and "Journey to Babel" providing enough grist for the mill of many future Vulcan stories. Dorothy Fontana's penning of the latter certainly ranks with one of the best ever Trek scripts.
As for extras and "Easter eggs," the second season has some nice bonuses. You can learn more about tribbles in the "To Boldly Go ..." Season Two featurette, watch a nice little short on the Redshirts (but you'll have find this one), "Writer's Notebook" with Dorothy Fontana (did I mention we love Dorothy?) and "Designing the Final Frontier."
The Season 2 set continues the color scheme, this time in the Sciences blue, and will sit nicely on your DVD case that is quickly being taken over by all the various Star Treks!
Season 2 is far out!
