Like the original "Trekkies" before it, "Trekkies 2" explores the wonderful world of
Star Trek fandom in all its permutations, including the emergence of a number of
Star Trek-inspired bands who combine their love of
Trek and music, creating a growing sub-genre of music by and for the
fans. This unique new genre gets full exposure on the film's soundtrack, available on Tuesday from Reboot Music.
"Trekkies 2: The Official Soundtrack" features a mix of both spoken word moments from the film and songs by bands such as Warp 11, Klingon heavy metal warriors Stovokor, and No Kill I (a nod to the Horta's plea from the Original Series classic "The Devil in the Dark"), plus No Kill I spin-offs No Kill: The Next Generation and No Kill I: Deep Space Nine. Like Star Trek itself, there are many different styles and genres represented, including filk music ("science fiction folk") by Leslie Fish, Angelica and Athrylis Sather Hodgett. Also featured on the disc are two versions (one regular, one instrumental) of the film's theme song, "Beam Me Up" by B-52's front man Fred Schneider and keyboardist Pat Irwin.
And as if great songs weren't enough, the CD also features interview segments and outtakes from both "Trekkies" films for a whopping 35 tracks.
Songs from the soundtrack are getting airplay on college radio stations across the country and the disc is in stores on Tuesday, October 5. "Trekkies 2" is available on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment. Both items are available via the links to the left.
