Not only does the upcoming "Trekkies 2" follow up on fans from the first documentary, the film also takes a look at
Star Trek's impact on music, something underscored by the forthcoming release of "Trekkies 2: The Official Soundtrack” from independent music label Reboot Music.
"We discovered some remarkably talented musicians who perform Trek-inspired songs to enthusiastic crowds,” said "Trekkies 2” producer Mike Leahy, "And not just at conventions, but at packed rock clubs. The bands have huge followings, and in some cases are getting widespread college and commercial radio airplay."
"These bands are hilarious, clever, entertaining, and most importantly: all about Star Trek," adds the film's director Roger Nygard. "How can you top that combination?! That's why we put the music segment last in the movie — nothing could follow it."
The soundtrack will contain original rock, metal, punk and folk music created by Star Trek fans featured in the film, due out on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment later this summer, including the film's theme song "Beam Me Up,” written and performed by Fred Schneider of The B-52's and keyboardist Pat Irwin.
"I am a life-long Star Trek fan, with the Voyager series being my favorite." said Schneider. "I saw the first 'Trekkies' movie, liked it and always like to do unusual projects.”
The compact disc soundtrack also includes songs from sci-fi rockers Warp 11, a band of "Klingon metal warriors" called Stovokor, punk rockers No Kill I (a reference to the Horta's plea from the Original Series episode "The Devil in the Dark") and their spawn No Kill I: Deep Space Nine and No Kill I: The Next Generation.
A musical sub-genre called "filk” (science fiction folk) features prominently on the album, with cuts from filk innovator Leslie Fish and filk teenagers Angelica and Athrylis Sather Hodgetts, The CD also includes orchestral selections and memorable interview segments from both "Trekkies” movies.
"Trekkies 2" will be released on DVD on August 31, and "Trekkies 2: The Official Soundtrack” will be available on October 5.
