In its lifetime,
Amazing Stories magazine was the longest running science fiction publication, notable for having introduced the world to an abundance of new writing talent. Unfortunately, as times changed, so to did the audience and the magazine ceased publication.
Amazing Stories enjoyed a brief renaissance back in 1998 when Wizards of the Coast resurrected the imprint and brought fresh stories to the fold, including some new
Star Trek sagas. Sadly, the latest incarnation of the magazine didn't last past 2000, but the stories survive thanks to Pocket Books' "Star Trek: The Amazing Stories."
This compilation of the seven short stories (four from Star Trek: The Next Generation and three from Star Trek: Voyager) that ran over the course of the two-year run of Amazing Stories differs from Pocket's Strange New Worlds series in that these are previously published authors such as Greg Cox, Christie Golden and the infamous D.W. "Prof" Smith (think Captain Proton!).
An enjoyable read, "Star Trek: The Amazing Stories" occupies a place on the bookshelf that harks back to another era when books were our DVDs and imagination our widescreen televisions.
