Normally we go on and on about the excellent set of bonus features that accompany the season by season collections of
Star Trek on DVD. Fair enough, as we've all seen the episodes and know exactly what's coming. The bonus features therefore serve as icing on the cake that makes us love DVDs even more. But
Star Trek: Voyager's second season reached a nice little creative peak that begs us to go back and review just how good this show could be.
Starting with the excellent and moving "The 37's" we see Captain Janeway in a vulnerable place, something that, even though she is stranded in the Delta Quadrant with her crew, she rarely ever is. "Initiations" shed some new light on the rituals of the Kazon. "Non Sequitur" finds Harry Kim in an alternate reality back on Earth, while "Maneuvers" has Chakotay paying for a past romantic liaison. "Meld" brings out another side to Tuvok, while "Tuvix" — simply classic Star Trek — reveals character aspects of Tuvok and Neelix, but as one being. True genius!
Taken as a whole, Season Two is a perfect reminder of why we love Star Trek. And this is just a reminder to you to remind yourself, in case you need reminding, that you probably should own these DVDs that arrive on May 18. Just a reminder. [Tim]
