iTunes Meets Star Trek

UPDATE: Click here to see all the current Star Trek items on iTunes.

One of the most successful product and technology breakthroughs in the past five years has been the iPod/iTunes partnership, courtesy of Apple. Star Trek fans who happen to own iPods can now join the party as all 10 of the Trek movies have made their way into the iTunes Store! It was simply inevitable that Star Trek, one of the greatest and most beloved entertainment franchises, would eventually join the ranks of music, TV shows, movies and podcasts that have preceded it on to the iTunes roster of goodies.

It should be noted that the movies released so far are the theatrical versions, i.e. no Director's Editions of "The Motion Picture" or "The Wrath of Khan." We will be sure to announce when the DVD versions make it onto iTunes. Watch this space!

Things have certainly changed in the past year; Star Trek and its various spin-offs have moved away from just the DVD and television syndication market to the download market. It started in early 2006 when Google Video launched their new service with a couple seasons of Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but to date this venture has never blossomed into anything resembling a complete catalogue. Amazon.com's Unbox opened its aforementioned "box" last year offering Star Trek and Enterprise episodes, along with some movies, to rent or purchase. The only catch being you need to download Amazon's proprietary software and have a PC to watch. Another option, for gamers especially, is the Xbox 360 offering, with Original Series and Enterprise episodes. For an easy-to-follow guide on where to watch or download, please click here.

It's worth noting that iTunes is both Mac and PC friendly and many readers will already have it on their computers for personal music and video needs. If not, you can get the free software here from Apple. The iPod is, by a very large margin, the most ubiquitous of the portable media players so chances are you may already be set to start enjoying Star Trek on the go or on your computer. (And don't even get us started on that nifty new iPhone coming out later this year!)

To get to the Star Trek movies, you can click here. Once you are in iTunes, to view the synopsis of the movie, right click on the show title, then choose "Show Description." To sort into different categories, you can click on any of the headings.

You should be all set to try Star Trek movies on your iPod! If you haven't got an iPod, but want to watch on your computer, just download iTunes from this link.

And welcome to the 21st Century!
