Star Trek Magazine #3: Spiner, Justman and more!

The latest issue of Titan's Star Trek Magazine (#3) is about to hit U.S. magazine racks and we have a little sneak peek at what's in store! First off, there's a piece on the always entertaining and witty Brent Spiner who says, "I don't tire of talking about Data ... What would be the point? ... This character is going to be with me for the rest of my life..." There's much more from Brent on his alter ego inside Issue #3.

Catch up with Original Series producer Bob Justman, who recalls the struggles trying to get the fledgling show off the ground. In this piece exclusive to STARTREK.COM, Justman says:

"When we set out to make the original Star Trek, we had no idea that what we were trying to do should have been an impossibility, for various practical and budgetary reasons," Star Trek's producer Robert H. Justman recalls with a grin. "So we just went ahead and, despite all the obstacles, we did it anyway! Looking back, I'm pleased with what we were able to accomplish on Star Trek. There are some things I wasn't able to make happen, but I feel I did all I could and I don't think I could do any better if I was to do it again, given the state of the art of the time we made the show in."

One of Justman's most unusual and important tasks on the original Star Trek was supervising the writing and recording of the show's now-legendary opening narration. "The narration was a combination of Gene Roddenberry, [story editor] John Black and myself; John and I both contributed some ideas," Justman recalls. "It was recorded on the last day possible. If we hadn't recorded it that day we wouldn't have made our airdate!

"It was magic how it happened. We got the go-ahead and I got Bill Shatner to meet me on the dubbing stage. We recorded the narration, without a hitch, but there was something lacking. It didn't seem to have the presence one wanted. So I told Bill to do it again and I spoke to the technicians and told them to put more reverberation into it. The next time Bill read the lines, they seemed to glow and linger and were more heroic in nature. The addition of that reverberation made the difference. Bill went right through it again from start to finish and that was it!

"While my involvement with Star Trek was very rewarding, working on Star Trek: The Next Generation was especially satisfying," he reveals. "I was very, very pleased with what we were able to achieve on that show, using the new toys we had in the motion picture industry. Everything just seemed to fall into place on The Next Generation: we made every date on our schedule, we achieved our financial goals and we got high ratings. There were no bad vibes at all. Finally, Star Trek was a hit! It was all very different from the days of the original show. I can still recall with horror how tight we would go to our deadlines on the Original Series; there was talk of delivering release prints [of episodes] to NBC on the day the show was aired!"

Rounding out Issue #3 are chats with Conner Trinneer ("Trip"), Vince Deadrick Jr. (stunt coordinator on Star Trek: Enterprise) and Dave Rossi's regular column, plus the usual news and reviews.

This issue will hit newsstands on December 26!
