After playing the enigmatic exiled-spy-turned-tailor Garak on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Andrew J. Robinson filled in a great deal of his character's back story with "A Stitch in Time." Written as a series of diary entries and correspondence between Garak and Dr. Julian Bashir following the end of the series and during the rebuilding of Cardassia after the Dominion War, the novel provides humor, danger and a strong sense of continuity within the Star Trek universe.
Remarkably, Robinson penned the novel without a co-writer — though he credits his editor at Pocket Books, Margaret Clark, for saving him from blunders in greater Star Trek knowledge — revealing that his storytelling abilities extend beyond acting and into writing as well. This compelling novel is a great read not only for the added background on Garak, but for the added cultural and historical depth on the Cardassians themselves. [Paul]
