From Issue #1
One of the Star Trek franchise's most influential writers, D.C. Fontana was instrumental to the series' success, as well as the spin-offs Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. David Bassom asks Fontana about her legendary contribution to
The franchise...
Tomorrow must feel like yesterday for Dorothy Fontana. A staggering four decades after she wrote her final episode of
Star Trek: The Original Series, the prolific screenwriter is preparing to launch viewers on a brand-new live-action adventure with
Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the
Starship Enterprise. Entitled "To Serve All My Days," Fontana's latest tale is the third installment of the fan-produced
Star Trek: New Voyages Internet series and is set to premiere on the 40th anniversary of the franchise's screen debut, on September 8 2006. "It was great to return to the original series universe and deal with those characters again for
New Voyages," says Fontana of her latest
Star Trek offering. "The idea behind New Voyages is that it's set after the end of the original series' third season — they want to complete the five-year mission — so it was a lot of fun to pick up from where we left off. It was a bit like getting into a time machine and traveling back to 1969! But the project also presented some interesting new challenges, since we had to find ways to do
Star Trek within this medium that were affordable and still tell what I think is a great story."
