A trio of Star Trek paperback books are hitting bookstore shelves on March 3, all hailing from different eras in the Star Trek universe, from the 20th century to the Enterprise era to the Original Series era.
First off is the paperback edition of Greg Cox's acclaimed "The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume Two." Originally released in hardcover, the sprawling tale of the secret Eugenics Wars on Earth that took place at the end of the 20th century is packed with familiar Star Trek faces and places culled from many different series, including the infamous Khan himself, Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, Shannon O'Donnell, Rain Robinson and a host of other characters watchful Star Trek fans will recognize. The story dovetails with actual historic events, such as the Bosnian conflicts of the '90's or the opening of the Chunnel (the tunnel under the English Channel), creating a fast-moving adventure that shows how Star Trek history and our own history can co-exist.
Moving forward 150 years or so, another Star Trek paperback being released March 3 is "Surak's Soul" by J.M. Dillard, an Enterprise novel. During an attempt at first contact with a new species, T'Pol finds her life threatened and must kill in self-defense.
The act jeopardizes her entire upbringing and personal values, having been raised believing strongly in the peaceful teachings of Surak. When T'Pol chooses to reject all violence, her choice may, as Captain Archer suggests, endanger the entire ship. "Surak's Soul" author Dillard has also written a number of Star Trek books, including adaptations of "Star Trek: First Contact," "Star Trek: Insurrection," "Star Trek Nemesis," the adaptation of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine pilot episode "Emissary,"and many others.
Continuing in the literary march through Star Trek history, readers can also pick up "Garth of Izar" by Pamela Sargent and George Zebrowski. As Original Series fans know, Garth of Izar was one of Starfleet's most legendary, resourceful captains before an accident rendered him murderously insane. This new books adds to Garth's mythos, with more of Garth's renowned history before the events of the Original Series episode "Whom Gods Destroy" and picks up after, to see where Garth's path leads him after his cure - if he's truly cured at all.
All three Star Trek paperback novels are published by Pocket Books, and are available online via the link below or at bookstores starting March 3.
