On the fourth day of eight filming "Datalore," the infamous "splitscreen" scenes in Data's quarters are filmed for the first time and fully bring to life the two androids Lore and Data, despite both being played by Brent Spiner. In these infant days of the series, visual effects coordinator Rob Legato is labeled as "VEC" on call sheets and listed along with the cast, stunt actor Brian Williams and photo double Mel Gilden for each scene. Williams remained as Spiner's personal choice for a stunt double and worked with the actor as late as his last Star Trek appearance, playing Dr. Arik Soong on Enterprise.

Slated for filming today is "the big shootout" scene in Cargo Bay 3, as it's listed on call sheets, between Lore and his pursuers in the climax of "Datalore." Shooting would sprawl into a second partial day for these scenes, with the action overseen by yet another stunt coordinator, Chuck Courtney, before the series hired Dennis "Danger" Madalone in that role full-time and throughout Voyager and Deep Space Nine as well. After appearing in two episodes, it would also be the final day of work for actor Biff Yeager as Lt. Cmdr. Argyle, the latest in a series of revolving chief engineers unresolved until Geordi LaForge was given that shipboard post full-time to begin Season 2.

Together with the Nov. 9 federal Monday holiday for Veterans' Day, the young TNG company shows its growing pains with the second and last day of a shutdown on stage while waiting on the lagging next script to be ready, "Angel One." Such script and production delays were infamous in the early days of the original series, but after TNG got its "space legs" and the writing staff stabilized such lost days were all but nonexistent, through this and all the spin-off shows.

They can't all be hits, and the first-season crunch of deadlines and stabilizing a writing staff leaves "Angel One" one of the young series' early clinkers. While this date, the second of the seven-day shoot, saw Leonard John Crowfoot begin his guest role as subservient Angellian male Trent, the actor later sacrificed even more dignity and comfort to play the gold-painted, body-sealed prototype android version of Data's "daughter" Lal for "The Offspring."

One of TNG's most infamous or amusing scenes ever — take your pick — is filmed this day, as Jonathan "Riker" Frakes dons in essence a revealing low-cut male dress to use his "masculine wiles" on leader Mistress Beata amid the matriarchal, reverse-sexist world of "Angel One."

As Data's quest for humanity begins to take shape in early episodes, the first day of filming "11001001" this date in 1987 includes a landmark scene along that path. His Sherlock Holmes fascination has already been seen taking root in "Lonely Among Us," but here Scene 15 in the Observation Lounge features the first time ever that the artist Data has ever been filmed—complete with a canvas depicting "Zylo eggs.?

The second day of filming "11001001" sees a truly special moment for the holodeck concept, the barely-developed Riker character and the young series overall when holo-program "Minuet" and the jazz band behind her are filmed for the first time — as are the four Bynar characters. It's also the first time we see actor Jonathan Frakes allowed to indulge his own trombone skill as a newly added character trait for Riker as he picks up the 'bone to jam with them.

A little bit of still-mysterious trivia is born this day, at least before the cameras: Scenes 12-14 of "11001001" are filmed in the corridor and provide the first mention anywhere of the popular though rough-and-tumble sport of Parrises squares. Very little is known about it, aside from its status as an official Academy sport, its use of "ion mallets" and a ramp for play, and the apparent mixed-gendered team size of four.

Some 21 1/2 years after filming his well-remembered turn as dilithium miner Herm Gossett in "Mudd's Women," actor Gene Dynarski becomes the latest Star Trek veteran to set foot before the TNG cameras. On this date, Dynarski begins the first of several days playing Commander Quinteros, head of Starbase 74 where the Bynars "upgrade project" is supposed to begin.
