Scott Bakula joins the picketers at Paramount for the WGA "Trek Day"
Scott Bakula talks about Boston Legal

Bakula Subpoenaed for Boston Legal

The main talk of the day on the picket line (story here) was certainly about the WGA strike action and the various reasons why actors and others within the industry are in support of the writers, but we also found time to get some news from Scott Bakula regarding his latest acting job. The Enterprise actor revealed that he had recently finished shooting an episode of Boston Legal, albeit without ever appearing in a scene with the infamous "Denny Crane." "I can tell you this, I have not one scene with Mr. Shatner. In fact, I didn't even see him. He and I have still not met," revealed Bakula.

With the writers strike putting the future of shows like Boston Legal on hold, viewers will have to wait and see if the two Trek captains' contemporary characters meet up in a future episode. It would certainly be fun to see the first and last Star Trek captains on the same show together, but at this point no one knows and there is no confirmation even if Bakula's character will return. Until then, fans of the show Murphy Brown can take heart that Bakula and Legal regular Candice Bergen ("Shirley Schmidt") will be reunited in this new episode as many of his scenes are with his former paramour from the long-running sitcom. "I have a really great character that they wrote, and most of my work is with Candice."

Bakula also hinted that the episode might be called "Glow in the Dark," an appropriate title as the script centers around the issue of nuclear power plants.

As for how Boston Legal has remained in production this long after most shows have shut down due to lack of pre-strike shooting scripts, there is a perfectly good explanation. "What I was told is that Mr. [David E.] Kelley got busy a week before the strike and ripped out three episodes to keep his crew working all the way to the holidays."

One of Kelley's strong points is that he often writes to an actor's strength, and with Scott's role, this appears to apply once more. "The script that I shot was really wonderful," concludes Bakula. "I get to sing a little bit, play the piano. Those are some little hints."

Look for this new episode sometime in the new year, perhaps late January, early February.
