Golden Globe Noms Include Shatner, Stewart, Logan, etc.

William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, writer John Logan and several other Trek alumni have been honored with nominations for the 2005 Golden Globe Awards, which were announced this morning and will be awarded in January.

Riding high off his Emmy win in September for his work in ABC's The Practice (related story), Shatner is now up for a Golden Globe for the same role in Boston Legal, that of pompous lawyer "Denny Crane." He's nominated in the category "Actor in a Supporting Role - Series, Mini-Series or Television Movie." This is Shatner's first Golden Globe recognition.

Patrick Stewart was honored in a similar category, but for a leading role performance. His characterization of King Henry II in the cable-TV movie "The Lion in Winter" won him a nomination for "Actor in a Leading Role - Mini-Series or Television Movie." Stewart was also executive producer of that telefilm, which itself earned a nomination in the category "Mini-Series or Television Movie." Stewart was nominated for a Globe once before, in 1998 for his performance in "Moby Dick." He is currently preparing a stage comedy in London called "A Life in the Theatre," opening January 27 (related story).

John Logan, who wrote "Star Trek Nemesis," adds to his list of high-profile kudos as a screenwriter. His script for the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator," which flies into theaters this weekend, got tapped in the "Motion Picture Screenplay" category. In 2001 Logan was nominated for an Oscar and a Saturn for "The Gladiator," and won a Writers Guild award for the TV movie "RKO 281." This is his first crack at a Golden Globe.

Several actresses who have appeared in Star Trek are among the Golden Globe nominees. There's a lot of buzz around Virginia Madsen for her portrayal of a wine connoisseur in "Sideways." She's contending for "Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture." Nearly seven years ago Madsen did an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, where she played Chakotay's memory-challenged love interest "Kellin" in "Unforgettable."

Ashley Judd is one of the great success stories of those who got their start in Star Trek. She first came to the world's attention as "Ensign Robin Lefler" in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation ("Darmok" and "The Game"), and went on to become a major movie star. She now has her second Globe nomination, recognized this year for her performance as the wife of composer Cole Porter in "De-Lovely." She is vying for "Actress in a Leading Role - Musical or Comedy."

Among the TV categories, Teri Hatcher is one of three actresses nominated in the same category for the latest water-cooler-topic Desperate Housewives. Hatcher plays man-hungry single mother "Susan Mayer" and is competing with her castmates and others for "Actress in a Leading Role - Musical or Comedy Series." One of Hatcher's earliest parts was on TNG, as "Lt. B.G. Robinson" in "The Outrageous Okona."

The 62nd Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday, January 16, live on NBC (tape-delayed in the West). The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards the Globes each year, prior to the Academy Awards, to honor achievements in both film and television.
