Hollywood Readying for Doohan Star

The star is in place on the boulevard, and it's just waiting for its coming-out party. Tomorrow morning (Tuesday), James Doohan's status as a TV and movie legend will be permanently emblazoned upon the Hollywood Walk of Fame, placing "Scotty" among the elite of the entertainment world who shall never be forgotten.

The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Hollywood Entertainment Museum at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. It'll be an elaborate and unusual affair, involving bagpipe players, Klingons, and who knows what other strange lifeforms (of course, being Hollywood, nothing is ever too out of place). The event is open to the public, and expected to be very, very crowded.

Doohan's star is located a mere few steps away from that of DeForest Kelley, Doohan's Star Trek colleague who died in 1999. Another nearby star is Patrick Stewart's, whom Doohan performed with in "Relics."  Also along the same block are the stars for Ricardo Montalban ("Khan"), Kelsey Grammer ("Bateson") and Diane Warren (composer of the Star Trek: Enterprise theme song). According to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Web site, Doohan's star is the 2,261st one to grace the world's most famous sidewalk.

The Walk of Fame ceremony is the culmination of a long weekend of honors for the 84-year-old actor. Planet Xpo hosted Doohan's farewell convention at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel, a joyous occasion that celebrated the life of the venerated actor and the impact his character has had on society and on generations of fans. Not only was Doohan joined by all of his living Original Series castmates, but dozens of other actors from the various incarnations of Star Trek, and the first man to ever step foot on another world, Neil Armstrong.

Armstrong made a very rare public appearance to pay tribute to the Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise by speaking at the convention's Saturday night banquet. He also greeted Doohan on stage along with the classic cast during the weekend's grand finale on Sunday. It turns out the history-making astronaut is quite the Trek fan!

In fragile health, Doohan appeared as often and for as long as his energy would allow. He came to the Friday night party to mingle with well-wishers and hear his son, Chris, perform with his rock band. He was available both afternoons for photo ops with the fans. The guest of honor was fully decked out for the formal banquet Saturday night (a fundraiser for Alzheimer's disease research) to hear the many tributes to him, and was reportedly in tears that night from the outpouring of affection. Sunday afternoon he and his family held a press conference; Doohan himself could only speak a few words, so his wife Wende and several of his grown children did most of the talking. Doohan was in a wheelchair the entire time, except for the grand finale Sunday, when two of his sons helped him to his feet toward the chair in center stage. Doohan received the ovation of a lifetime, but he did not speak.

Though this was a "Farewell" convention, it was noted during the weekend that this was not a "Good-bye," but a "See ya later."

Complete coverage of the weekend, as well as Tuesday's Walk of Fame ceremony, is forthcoming here on STARTREK.COM. Stay tuned.
