Special effects innovator Martin Becker, who worked on "
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," died August 13 from pancreatic cancer. He was 49.
Becker was the co-owner of Reel Efx, which pioneered the "frozen moment" multi-camera technology popularized by "The Matrix." Becker also designed the first radio-controlled puppet — namely, Kermit the Frog riding a bike in "The Muppet Movie." He got his start in the movie business on "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" when his talents for flying model airplanes were used to create a flying mechanical bird.
Becker also worked on several of the "Friday the 13th" movies among other film and TV credits, along with numerous award-winning commercials.
Memorial services will be held this Saturday in Glendale, a suburb of Los Angeles where Becker was a lifelong resident.
