Montgomery Film in Festival Screening on Friday
An independent feature film that Anthony Montgomery shot last year is being screened this coming Friday in Beverly Hills as part of the Hollywood Black Film Festival. Originally titled "The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks" and now called "I'm Through with White Girls," the romantic comedy stars Montgomery as "Jay Brooks," a storyboard artist and comic/sci-fi junkie with race-related relationship issues (a comic/sci-fi junkie with relationship issues...go figure). The movie plays at 9:00 p.m. June 8 at the Fine Arts Theatre, 8556 Wilshire Blvd. (the same venue where Jolene Blalock's "Shadow Puppets" is showing June 22-28). You can see a trailer for "White Girls" and get more info at this festival link.
The film, which also features Cirroc Lofton, has been gaining a lot of buzz on the festival circuit. In April it won awards at the Cannes Pan African Film Festival and at the Houston Worldfest, and drew an overflow crowd at the Atlanta Film Festival. According to one reviewer, a distribution deal shouldn't be far behind — which means you could see it sometime soon in a local arthouse theater.
The Enterprise helmsman has more news on another creative front. Montgomery just signed with a German music label called AGR Television Records, which will produce his first complete hip-hop music album. It will be titled "A.T" (after his former stage name) and will consist of 12 tracks, four of which originated on his demo album "What You Know About..." which he self-produced in 2005. One of those songs is called "Trek," containing lyrics inspired by his "Travis Mayweather" character. Montgomery will be going into the studio in the next two weeks to record eight new songs, and possibly one or two bonus tracks. "A.T" is scheduled for release worldwide this summer, and Montgomery will tour the United States and Canada to promote it. "They [AGR] love my sound and are eager to get the album out into the market," he says. "I'll need all the love, support and encouragement our wonderful Star Trek fans can give me!"
Montgomery also informs us that he has begun writing a book geared toward the 8-12 age bracket, the first of five based on an animated television series that he has developed but not yet sold, plus he is engaged to be married later this year. Busy guy!
"Vulcan Space Adventure" Holo-Game Launches in Alberta
There's another event on June 8 to mark your calendars with if you live further up north: On Friday the Canadian town of Vulcan, Alberta, will launch a new virtual reality attraction called the "Vulcan Space Adventure." It will open its doors during the Galaxyfest Star Trek convention June 8-10 featuring special guests Max Grodenchik and Aron Eisenberg.
The Vulcan Space Adventure puts up to three players at a time onto the bridge of a starship where they face a large holographic screen from which they receive instructions from Command. They then fight off alien invaders by moving their hand through the air to point and shoot their weapons, utilizing a gesture-based computer interface.
The attraction is part of the community's Tourism & Trek Station, a tourist information center built 10 years ago with a science and science fiction theme to capitalize on the town's name. Vulcan also has its own five-ton starship on display, and space murals and alien signage grace many of the town's walls and street corners.
Aside from the formal opening of the Space Adventure and the celebrity appearances, Galaxyfest weekend will include such events as a parade, a "Klingon Fear Factor" competition, visits to a travelling planetarium, and an interactive video conference with the Canadian Space Agency on "Science Fact and Science Fiction." There will also be a banquet with a costume contest and cabaret.
For more information visit www.vulcantourism.com — from there you can click on "Vulcan Space Adventure," and on the Okudagram menu roll over "Events" and select "Galaxyfest."
Registration Begins for Online Trek Class
In our earlier story on Trek Academe, we mentioned that Lake Tahoe Community College will once again offer its Star Trek Anthropology course on-line this summer. Registration for that summer class is now open. It is listed in the course catalog as ANT 131S-1, "Special Topics: The Anthropology of Star Trek," taught by Daryl Frazetti. The four-unit course runs from July 2 to August 10, and there are 30 spots open. Course fees vary depending on whether you are a resident of California, Nevada, or another state.
To learn more about the course, visit www.ltcc.edu, and under "Register Now" click on "Summer Schedule"; the Trek course is the fifth one on the chart. Also visit this course information page. Feel free to e-mail Frazetti at frazetti@ltcc.edu.
Registration is also open for a similar class — though live, rather than on-line — at College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois, between Chicago and Milwaukee. "Cultural Anthropology: Star Trek Edition," ANT 221-002, will be held on-campus for six weeks starting June 25, taught by Frazetti as a guest instructor, along with John Tenuto. One of the highlights of the class will be an optional field trip to Trek Fest in Riverside, Iowa, June 29-30 — so students can "collect data for their ethnographic studies on the subculture of fandom," Frazetti tells us. For more info visit www.clcillinois.edu, and/or contact Tenuto at (847) 543-2537 or jtenuto@clcillinois.edu.
Frazetti will be speaking at the InConJunction Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention in Indianapolis on the topic "The Anthropology of Star Trek, Star Wars & The Lord of the Rings." The con runs July 6-8, and Frazetti will appear on the main stage at 11 a.m. on Saturday the 7th. (7/7/7! Good luck Daryl!)
