STARTREK.COM recently submitted questions to the developers of the new Las Vegas-based "Borg Invasion 4D." Below is a transcript of the first part of our Q&A session with Charles ("Chuck") Myers, VP of Project Development for Paramount Parks Projects. Q: How did the idea for "Borg Invasion 4D" come about?
Charles Myers: Many guests have enjoyed the original attraction here at Star Trek: The Experience. It's only natural we build on that success and create a new, totally different experience for our guests ... including those who live in Vegas and the millions who visit the city each year.
Q: How long has this idea been brewing and when did work start in Vegas?
CM:The attraction has been in development for three years. We started clearing the space out in early June 2003, so construction has already begun.
Q: What are some of the changes taking place at the Las Vegas Hilton?
CM: Construction changes at the attraction include a full renovation of the existing facility to make room for the new attraction. The new attraction will fit into a space that is an exact mirror image of the space that encompasses "Klingon Encounter"; approximately 15,000 square feet.
Q: How does the story of the attraction fit into the Star Trek/Borg timeline?
CM: We worked closely with Rick Berman Productions, members of the Star Trek production teams and Viacom Consumer Products (the division of our company that oversees all Star Trek licensing) to insure the experience is authentic and true to the amazing world of Star Trek.
Q: What are some of the innovations that have occurred over the last several years for this type of attraction since the original Star Trek: The Experience adventure?
CM: "Borg Invasion 4D" is different from the original attraction, "Klingon Encounter," in many ways. "Borg Invasion 4D" is a darker and edgier side of Star Trek and a truly immersive experience. This is the most ambitious 4D experience ever created and represents a number of "firsts" including:
- The first Star Trek production that has ever been shot digitally.
- The first all-digital motion picture to incorporate live action and animation within a 3D cinema environment.
- The first multiple-angle 3D cinema production with 3D effects from the front, overhead and both right and left sides of the participant.
- The first worldwide attraction to use 2K digital cinema projection, which is two times clearer than any other digital projection system in the world.
- "Borg Invasion 4D" is an unprecedented marriage of technology and live entertainment, combining chilling special effects with live actors inside the theater.
Q: Is there any other attraction out there that compares to this new "Invasion" experience?
CM: "Borg Invasion 4D" is the most ambitious 4D experience ever created and is like nothing guests will have seen or experienced before. The participants will be amazed by the multiple state-of-the-art technologies and special effects that immerse visitors into the power of Star Trek.
