Star Trek at the Oscars
Once again, as every year, a number of Star Trek alumni have distinguished themselves with nominations in musical and technical categories for the 76th Annual Academy Awards, which were announced Tuesday morning.
A surprising name on the list is Michael McKean, nominated in the Original Song category for "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" which he co-wrote for the quirky film "A Mighty Wind." McKean appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "The Thaw" as "The Clown." In the Original Score category, James Horner earned his ninth Oscar nom for "House of Sand and Fog." Horner composed the music for "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." If he wins, this'll be his third Oscar.
In the Visual Effects race, every film nominated has at least one Trek alumni listed: Jim Rygiel and Joe Letteri for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"; Robert Stromberg for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World"; and John Knoll and Terry D. Frazee for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." Rygiel worked on "Star Trek: Insurrection"; Letteri for "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." Stromberg was a matte artist for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager. Knoll did visual effects on TNG's "Encounter at Farpoint" as well as "Star Trek Generations" and "Star Trek: First Contact." Frazee worked on all of the last five Trek movies including "Star Trek Nemesis." Letteri has already been tapped to receive a Technical Achievement Award, which will be presented in a separate ceremony. He and two others are being recognized "for their groundbreaking implementations of practical methods for rendering skin and other translucent materials using subsurface scattering techniques."
In Makeup, Edouard F. Henriques and Yolanda Toussieng were nominated for "Master and Commander." Henriques was a special makeup artist on "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"; Toussieng was a hair stylist for "Insurrection." Competing with them is Ve Neill for "Pirates of the Caribbean," who worked on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
For Sound Editing, George Watters II is among the nominees for "Pirates"; he was sound editor on "ST: TMP," "ST II" and "ST VI." In Sound Mixing, Doug Hemphill is listed for "Master and Commander"; he worked on "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "ST V."
Good luck to all the nominees. Be sure to tune in on Sunday, February 29, on ABC for the results.
Boston Public Gives Way to Wonderfalls
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Fox television network has opted not to pick up additional episodes Boston Public, which starred Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan ("Seven of Nine"). In its place is the midseason show Wonderfalls, which also has some Star Trek connections, having been co-created by former Voyager writer Bryan Fuller and starring William Sadler, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's villainous Luthor Sloane of Section 31.
Wonderfalls is slated to take over Boston Public's 9:00 p.m. Friday night slot on March 12.
