Mulgrew Goes Back in Time ... Twice

Kate Mulgrew has two theatrical engagements coming up in New York. The first is a one-night only program — Monday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. — at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. She will join two other "great women of the American theater" in "History Girls: Constance, Elizabeth, and Margaret," a look at three epic roles from Shakespeare's history plays. Mulgrew will perform Margaret from "Henry VI, Part 3" and "Richard III." The Kaye Playhouse is located on 68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. Limited tickets, priced at $25 and $15, are available by visiting the theatre's box office or by calling (212) 772-4448.

And as previously reported, Mulgrew has a two-month stint as a famous 19th-century actress who was performing at Ford's Theater the night Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. She plays "Laura Keane" in "Our Leading Lady," written by Charles Busch, a theatrical production about theatrical production. The play runs February 22 through April 22 at the New York City Center on West 55th Street. TotallyKate.com has complete information on how to get tickets (from the home page, click on "Latest News!").

On a side note, Totally Kate! is also reporting that Mulgrew has contributed to a new book titled "Voices of Alzheimer's." Mulgrew lost her mother to the disease last July, and spoke about it a few weeks later at the Las Vegas 40th anniversary convention. In the book, profits from which will be donated to The Healing Project, Mulgrew wrote a piece titled "Caught in the Net," which describes in metaphorical terms the emotional distress caused by the disease. Wallace Shawn Down with "Fever"

The character actor who made temperatures rise as "Grand Nagus Zek" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is doing it again with "The Fever." Wallace Shawn is performing a revival of a 1990 one-man show that he wrote himself, described as "a monologue on liberal guilt," off-Broadway in New York. Shawn plays a character called "The Traveler" (interesting...) who describes waking up in a war-torn country with a terrible fever, unable to reconcile the privilege he has enjoyed with the atrocities he has witnessed.

A rave review in The Hollywood Reporter says, "Shawn employs his unique form of charisma to draw viewers in from the get-go," adding that his "vividly descriptive" dialog is laced with "sharp contrasts wherein humor and horror intermingle."

The show is running Monday through Saturday now through March 3 at the Acorn Theatre on Theatre Row, 410 W. 42nd St. For tickets and other info, visit TheNewGroup.org.

In a Newsday.com interview about "Fever," Shawn responds to a question referencing his role in DS9 by saying, "Hollywood has definitely come to the conclusion that I am not really the typical human, and I'm more appropriately cast as an animal or a creature from outer space ... I've frequently been in films where I've slowly realized that the reason I was hired was that in somebody's view the very idea of me as a human being is a joke."

Peter Weller, Harris Yulin Bring it "Home"

A few steps away from Wallace Shawn, two other notable Trek guest stars are performing together. Peter Weller, who lent his formidable talent to "Demons" and "Terra Prime" as "John Frederick Paxton," stars as the iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright in "Frank's Home," running now through February 18 at the Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater, 416 W. 42nd.

Weller is joined by Harris Yulin, who himself was exceptional as "Aamin Marritza" in "Duet." Yulin plays Wright's mentor Louis Sullivan, in a story about the architect's attempts to mend broken family relationships.

A Hollywood Reporter review is critical of the script but praises the actors profusely: "Weller proves a commanding presence in each of his scenes, whether twirling his walking stick with masterly flourish or using his cocky swagger to intimidate all in his sphere. His seemingly effortless mix of pride, vulnerability and villainy is remarkable ... The cast's other standout is the ever-reliable Yulin as the down-and-out Sullivan. His sad eyes and perpetual attempt to maintain false bravado is note-perfect."

"Frank's Home" is running Tuesday through Sunday for the next two weeks. Visit PlaywrightsHorizons.com for info or tickets, or call (212) 279-4200.

Salome Jens Behind "Hurt"

Back here in L.A., another prominent guest star from DS9 is behind the scenes of a well-reviewed play. Salome Jens, the villainous "Female Shapeshifter" (who also performed in similar makeup in TNG's "The Chase") is the director of "Bad Hurt on Cedar Street," an intense drama about a troubled Irish-American family in Rhode Island. The scenario takes place during Easter weekend in 2001, and revolves around the family matriarch Elaine Kendall, who battles the caretaking problems of her son, a drug-addicted Desert Storm veteran, and her unrestrainable retarded daughter.

A review in Variety says, "Helmer Salome Jens impressively guides an excellent ensemble through the chaos swirling around Elaine, realistically depicting the needs and deeds that afflict this woman's daily life."

"Bad Hurt on Cedar Street" is running Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through February 24 at the Greenway Court Theatre, 544 N. Fairfax in Hollywood. Visit GreenwayArts.org or call (323) 655-7679, ext.100.

Jens was profiled in the LA Weekly in conjunction with this show, in an article that calls her "Los Angeles' grande dame of theater." (Interesting how another DS9 recurring player, Andrew J. Robinson — who is currently directing a play at the Pasadena Playhouse — was recently dubbed the "center" of L.A. theater.) The very illuminating profile of Jens can be found at this LAWeekly.com link.

Jason Alexander is "Sunday" Driver

Finally, another L.A. production is being directed by a guest star from Voyager. Jason Alexander ("Kurros" in "Think Tank") has staged a revival of "Sunday in the Park with George" (no, not George Costanza) at the Ralph Freud Playhouse on the UCLA campus. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Stephen Sondheim musical is a depiction of artists' torment, explored through the characters of French painter Georges Seurat in the first act and a fictional 20th-century George in the second act.

This show is running every evening except Monday for the next week, closing February 11. Find more information at Ticketmaster.com.
