Madlyn Rhue — who played
Lt. Marla McGivers, the
Enterprise historian who fell in love with
Khan in the Original Series episode "
Space Seed" — is being remembered for her long career as a television character actress and her battle with multiple sclerosis.
Rhue died Tuesday at the age of 68 after a bout with pneumonia at the Motion Picture and Television Fund hospital in Woodland Hills, where she had been receiving full-time care since 1998, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The attractive actress with the large, expressive hazel eyes was a familiar presence on television for more than three decades, with guest spots in such shows as Have Gun-Will Travel, The Untouchables, I Spy, The Wild Wild West, Kolchak: The Night Stalker and CHiPS. She was also in a few movies including "Operation Petticoat" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World."
Rhue was in her professional prime in 1977 when she was diagnosed with MS, a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system. She kept her condition secret for years, making excuses for her weakening legs like a "car accident," but by 1985 she was confined to a wheelchair. With support from friends, though, she continued to find work, including a part on the cop drama Houston Knights as a wheelchair-bound ballistics expert, and a recurring role as a librarian on Murder, She Wrote.
In 1988 a National Multiple Sclerosis Society ad campaign showed Rhue in her wheelchair noting that she "can't walk so well anymore, but she can still perform." It was headlined, "Even with MS, Madlyn Rhue Is On a Roll."
The funeral will be private, but a public memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Motion Picture and Television Fund in Woodland Hills.
