History Channel Goes "Beyond the Final Frontier"

TiVo alert: Catch the rebroadcast this Saturday night/Sunday morning (Feb. 24-25) on the History Channel. Airs at 8:00 p.m. and 12 midnight respectively.

Leonard Nimoy is set to host a History Channel documentary next month celebrating the 40-year science fiction phenomenon that is Star Trek. Scheduled to air Monday, February 19, 2007 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, "Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier" is an exclusive look behind one of the world's most popular entertainment franchises.

From the conventions in Las Vegas and Europe to the dedicated collectors from around the world, Star Trek has cemented itself as a unique pop culture icon that continues to captivate devoted audiences. Complete with original interviews with top names from each series, including Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew and Avery Brooks among others, "Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier" examines the series as a global cultural phenomenon and discusses the impact that the five Star Trek television series and ten feature films have had on its legions of followers.

In addition, the documentary goes behind the scenes with the people responsible for developing the Star Trek universe, including writers, prop and model makers, costume and set designers, technicians and directors. Without them, no one would ever have known what Vulcan ears or Klingons were, and the Starship Enterprise may have never gotten off the ground.

Footage from CBS Paramount's first-ever official auction of costumes, props, set pieces and models — "40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection" — serves as the starting point to tell the many stories that make up the legend of Star Trek. The auction, which emanated from Christies Auction House in New York, was webcast live on the official website of The History Channel, History.com, in early October 2006.
