Showbiz Roundup: Trinneer, Picardo and more

Trinneer Speaks to Students

Connor Trinneer ("Trip Tucker") will visit University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) this weekend to share his experiences as an actor with students. Trinneer was in the actor training program at UMKC. In a press release, he notes that one of his professors, Dale Rose, had a tremendous impact on him. "He was the best acting teacher I ever had," he says. Trinneer will hold two sessions on Saturday, November 15 at the UMKC Performing Arts Center, Room 119 at 4949 Cherry Street. The first session will be for UMKC acting students and lasts from 10 a.m. to noon. The second session is open to the public and will take place from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

"Experience" The Doctor

Robert Picardo ("The Doctor") will be on hand at the Las Vegas Hilton's Star Trek: The Experience on Saturday, November 29. Picardo will promote his new book, CD and the upcoming Borg Invasion 4D attraction, opening in 2004. Picardo will do a free reading at Quark's Bar at 1 p.m. and sign autographs directly after. Autographs are $10 each and will be available for purchase from retail stores at The Experience on the day of the event. Picardo can also be seen in the new film "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," opening on Friday.

Takei is "Restless"

George Takei ("Hikaru Sulu") is set to play Reverend Daniel Tanaka on the CBS daytime serial "The Young and the Restless." Tanaka is the minister who officiates Dru (Victoria Roswell) and Neil's (Kristoff St. John) wedding. Takei began taping today — the episodes will air December 22 and 23.

Stewart, Grey and Judd Shine on Broadway

Patrick Stewart ("Jean-Luc Picard") is currently starring in Harold Pinter's "The Caretaker" as Davies, a tramp who is offered shelter by a pair of brothers. In Variety, Charles Isherwood writes that Stewart gives a "vivid, scrupulously detailed performance ..." He later adds that Stewart "fills out the grotesque contours of the role ably, barking out suspicious queries in a brusque growl, his eyes shifting endlessly, as if looking for the nearest escape route or preparing to dodge the next blow." The play is running at the American Airlines Theater on Broadway. Meanwhile, Joel Grey ("Caylem") and Ashley Judd ("Robin Lefler") are also making their mark on Broadway with a pair of high profile roles: Grey plays the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the musical "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theater, while Judd stars as Maggie the Cat in a revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at the Music Box Theatre.

Lions Gate Picks up Meaney Film

According to Variety, Lions Gate Films International has secured the world rights outside of French-speaking Europe and all of Canada for the Canadian/French/U.K. epic film "New France." The movie stars Gerard Depardieu, Tim Roth and Trek vet Colm Meaney ("Miles O'Brien") as Benjamin Franklin. The film is set during the struggle between England and France for control of Canada in 1759 and centers on a love story between a peasant woman and a trapper. "New France" will run through December 23 at locations in Canada, England and France. The film's producers hope that it will earn a place in next year's Festival de Cannes.

Rock is Johnny Bravo

A live-action feature film adaptation of Cartoon Network's Johnny Bravo is in the works with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ("The Champion") attached to star. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has hired Matthew Berry and Eric Abrams to pen the script. The movie will find Johnny Bravo searching for his long-lost father.

Pop's Parties

All Tomorrow's Parties, a weekend of music that took place November 8-9 in Long Beach, CA, featured a headlining performance from the reunited Iggy and the Stooges. Iggy, of course, is one-time Trek guest Iggy Pop ("Yelgrun"), and according to Variety, Pop and Co.'s performance made for one of the weekend's most compelling sets. Steven Mirkin writes that Iggy and the Stooges "proved that their riveting appearance at the Coachella festival earlier this year wasn't a fluke. Careening through basically the same set ... Iggy remains rock's Dorian Gray, with the same body, energy and hairline he had in 1970."
