Production Report: Dawson Does "Dead"

Roxann Dawson returned to Paramount once again, not to don a Klingon forehead, but to take the reins of "Dead Stop," the fifth second-season episode of Enterprise to roll film.

This is Dawson's third directorial effort on Enterprise. Last season she helmed "The Andorian Incident" and "Vox Sola." Most familiar to fans as "B'Elanna Torres," the actress crossed over into directing on Star Trek: Voyager with "Riddles" and "Workforce, Part II."

"Dead Stop" takes place in the aftermath of "Minefield", as the damaged Enterprise docks at a fully automated alien repair station. Even at an uninhabited computer-operated facility, things are not quite on the up-and-up.

About half of the seven-day production schedule, which concluded yesterday, took place on sets built just for this episode depicting the interior of the alien space station. The other half utilized standing ship sets, mainly Bridge, Sickbay and Launch Bay. The Inspection Pod seen in "Broken Bow" was put back into service for one scene. But a lot of the episode will be created in post-production, where digital effects will to a large extent bring life to the "character" of the repair station.

Over the last week and a half, many of the show's production resources, including actors, were shared with second unit photography taking place concurrently for the previous four episodes. Visual effects producer Dan Curry took the director's chair for two days to capture more exterior ship shots for "Minefield" that will involve special opticals in post, and stole away Dominic Keating ("Malcolm Reed") for much of that time. On one of those days, Keating went directly from "Minefield" to the Sickbay for "Dead Stop," where he sported a huge scar on his leg resulting from the prior incident. (A prosthetic scar, that is.)

Also worked into the schedule amidst Dawson's episode were several pick-up shots for "Carbon Creek," "Shockwave, Part II" and "A Night in Sickbay."

"Dead Stop" was written by Mike Sussman and Phyllis Strong, the team behind several Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise teleplays, including "Prophecy," "Author, Author," "Strange New World" and "Detained."

The new season will premiere September 18 with "Shockwave, Part II," but the schedule of airdates for the subsequent episodes is still to be determined.
