We at STARTREK.COM take great pride in our work. And when it comes to our exclusive interviews, we put a lot of time into researching the subject, no matter who they are. We read their books, watch key episodes, check out their appearances on other shows, review our old on-line chat transcripts and our convention reports. Heck, we even listen to their records! Sure, it's exhausting, but it's something we do in order to formulate just the right questions, to capture the spirit of the moment, and to ensnare the very essence of that creative being so that their brief time with us will last but a lifetime.
As it happens, last Wednesday we got word that we could interview William Shatner later that day. But what of our lofty interview preparation techniques? Would they be jettisoned for the sake of a spur-of-the-moment video shoot? Perish the thought! So with utmost professionalism and alacrity, we embarked upon this rare opportunity for a one-on-one with a legend and to probe deep into his soul and see what makes him tick.
Or something like that.
The bottom line is, any time spent with Shatner is exhilarating, no matter what direction the conversation takes, as TV viewers and convention-goers will vouch for. You never know what will happen, so you relish every second and you make it happen.
Fast forward to later that day, at the G4 studios in West Los Angeles, and Tim Gaskill gets to sit down with Mr. Shatner and discuss things like video games, a certain celebrity roast, Secaucus and more. It was very informal and spontaneous — you'll even hear Shatner's wife, Elizabeth, making comments off-screen. We didn't cover all the ground we'd hope to (he had to go on the air with Attack of the Show), but it was all great fun ... especially towards the end of this interview! You will laugh ... oh yes, you will laugh.
