Showbiz Roundup: Mulgrew, Braga and the Wrath of "Bill"

Trek Thesps in "Everquest"

According to Variety, several Star Trek alums will lend their voices to Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming sequel to its massively multiplayer online game "Everquest." "Lords of Everquest," which debuts this fall, will feature Kate Mulgrew ("Kathryn Janeway"), Dwight Schultz ("Reginald Barclay") and Ron Perlman (the villainous "Viceroy" in "Star Trek Nemesis").

Braga Accepts Award

Enterprise exec producer Brannon Braga will be on-hand at Kent State University on October 18 to accept the Distinguished Alumni Award. The Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception. Dinner and the awards ceremony begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 (dinner for one), $125 (Gold Sponsor: dinner for two guests with their names in the evening's program) and $400 (Corporate Sponsor: dinner for eight people and the company name in the program). For tickets, call (330) 244-3224. For more information, check out the alumni site.

The Wrath of "Bill"

Quentin Tarantino's sprawling revenge epic "Kill Bill: Volume I" is in theaters this Friday — and Trek fans might be surprised to learn that the director cites a certain sci-fi movie in the opening. According to the Associated Press, Tarantino opens his film with a "Klingon proverb" from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan": "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

Notes the AP: "The line actually first appeared in the 18th-century French novel on which 'Dangerous Liaisons' was based, but the Klingons are well-known literary usurpers." Check out the full article here.

"Out of Time" Wows Critics, Box Office

The Denzel Washington thriller "Out of Time" — which also happens to star Mr. John Billingsley ("Phlox") — did well at the box office last weekend, raking in 17 million and placing second behind "School of Rock." The movie is also netting many positive reviews for Billingsley, who plays Chae, the local medical examiner and Washington's comedic sidekick. The Washington Post calls Billingsley "hilarious," noting that the actor "steals most scenes he's in," while Newsday notes that the actor's "chain-smoking, wise-cracking medical examiner, Chae, is consistently funny."

"Stigma" SHINEs

Enterprise's second season episode "Stigma" has been nominated for a SHINE (Sexual Health IN Entertainment) Award. The Awards, which are organized by The Media Project, honor "those in the entertainment industry who have done an exemplary job incorporating accurate and honest portrayals of sexuality into their programming." "Stigma" is nominated in the Drama Episode category. Winners will be announced October 18. For more information, check out The Media Project Web site.

Shatner at Friendly House Awards Luncheon

On Saturday William Shatner will honor the executive director of Friendly House, the alcohol and drug treatment program for women which operates a facility dedicated to his late wife Nerine. Shatner will present Peggy Albrecht with the Golden Heart Award at the 14th Annual Friendly House Awards Luncheon in Beverly Hills on October 11. To attend the fundraiser or to make a donation in memory of Nerine, please call (213) 389-9964, or visit the News & Events page of WilliamShatner.com for further information.

Guest Star Sightings

New projects abound for various former Trek guest stars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Alexander ("Kurros") has signed on to star in a CBS sitcom based on the writings of Washington Post journalist Tony Kornheiser. Alexander will play a married TV journalist trying to raise his two kids.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ("Champion") is set to star in "Spy Hunter," according to Variety. The film is an adaptation of the '80s videogame of the same name. Universal is hoping for a summer 2005 release, and wants to develop the film into a franchise. The Rock will play an ex-fighter pilot who battles spies with his high-tech G-6155 Interceptor car. The script is being penned by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas ("2 Fast 2 Furious) and production will begin in spring of 2004.

Kelsey Grammer ("Captain Morgan Bateson") plans to executive produce a talk show with his wife Camille for Spike TV. Spike and Grammer's Grammnet Productions will develop the series, which is to be hosted by Camille. Grammnet is looking for additional female co-hosts. The pilot will be taped in November and is being described as a cross between "The Man Show" and "The View," according to Variety.

Be on the outlook for Clint Howard in "House of the Dead," hitting theaters this weekend. According to most reviews, the Sega game-based flick is unabashedly "loud, dumb and bloody" but never dull, and could be headed to cult status. Howard plays "Salish," the first mate to a fisherman named "Captain Kirk" (apparently there are a number of Star Trek jokes in the movie). The younger brother of Ron Howard has been a Trek figure since he was a child, playing "Balok" in "The Corbomite Maneuver." Years later he was "Grady" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's "Past Tense, Part II," then the Ferengi "Muk" in Enterprise's "Acquisition."
