Edward Laurence Albert, who played "Zayra" in the early Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "A Man Alone," died last Friday at age 55 after a battle with lung cancer, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Albert's character was a Bajoran who accused Odo of killing a fellow Bajoran, and instigated a racist mob uprising against the shapeshifter.

Because of his name, Albert is certainly most famous as the son of Green Acres star and screen legend Eddie Albert. But Edward Jr. established his own credentials by co-starring with Goldie Hawn in the 1972 film "Butterflies are Free," winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a young blind man trying to break free from his overly protective mother.

He appeared in more than 120 movies and television shows, including such diverse productions as "Midway" and the 1981 sci-fi thriller "Galaxy of Terror" with the late Ray Walston ("Boothby"). He also worked on stage, where three years ago he co-starred in "Cesar and Ruben," a musical about the life of union leader Cesar Chavez written and directed by Ed Begley Jr. ("Henry Starling"). Like Begley, Albert was also an outspoken environmental activist.

Albert — whose middle name comes from his godfather, Laurence Olivier — devoted the last decade of his life caring for his father, who had Alzheimer's disease and died last year at age 99.
