Showbiz Roundup: Picardo, Combs and more

Combs Kicks Off Mania Fest

Don't forget: Mania Fest, a major genre film festival in Santa Monica, CA, starts this week. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine alum Chase Masterson ("Leeta") serves as festival chairwoman. Tomorrow night (Thursday, September 18) features the West Coast premiere of "Beyond Re-Animator," starring Masterson's DS9 castmate Jeffrey Combs ("Weyoun") reprising his role as Dr. Herbert West from the first two "Re-Animator" flicks. Combs will be there in person for a Q&A session following the 9:45 p.m. screening. For more information and ticket prices, check out Mania Fest's official site.

Picardo Scores Ovation Nom

Robert Picardo ("The Doctor") has been nominated for an Ovation Award in the category of Featured Actor in a Musical for his work in "On the Twentieth Century" (related story). Picardo received strong notices for his work in the play as business agent Oliver Webb (related story). You can next catch Picardo in the NBC series The Lyon's Den premiering Sunday, Sept. 28 on NBC. And speaking of that show, Picardo's Star Trek: Voyager castmate Roxann Dawson ("Torres") is also filming an appearance on the series, according to her official Web site.

Come to the Carnivale

HBO's newest dramatic series, which involves the participation of a pair of key Trek alums, is already a blockbuster. The show, which revolves around a traveling carnival troupe in the 1930s, drew 5.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched series premiere in HBO history. John Fleck ("Silik") is part of the series' ensemble cast, playing the lizard-like "Gecko," while former Trek scribe and producer Ronald D. Moore serves as executive producer. The show airs Sundays at 9 p.m.

TV Guide Praises Enterprise

The new, more action-oriented direction of Enterprise is sitting well with TV Guide. A new review on the magazine's Web site offers some kind words for the show as it ventures into Season 3. "It's fun to see [Scott] Bakula get tough, like in the season opener ["The Xindi"] when Archer cuts loose with the fisticuffs like Captain Kirk used to," writes critic G.J. Donnelly.

Murphy is "Wonderful"

Donna Murphy ("Anij" in "Star Trek: Insurrection") will star in a new production of the musical "Wonderful Town" on Broadway. "Wonderful Town" tells the story of two sisters from Ohio, hoping to make it big in New York City. It features a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Performances begin November 5 in the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

UPDATE: Ryan a Presenter at Emmys

Jeri Ryan ("Seven of Nine") will be a presenter at the 55th annual Primetime Emmy Awards taking place this Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The awards show will air on Fox from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific (that's live on the East Coast, tape-delayed in the West — check your local listings).

Speaking of Emmys, congratulations go to Alfre Woodard and Junie Lowry-Johnson for their Emmy wins last weekend at the Creative Arts Awards, a presentation of technical honors and several guest actor categories. Woodard ("Lily Sloane" in "Star Trek: First Contact") won Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for her appearance in The Practice. Casting director Lowry-Johnson, who has worked on Trek movies and TV for many years and continues to do so, took the trophy for Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series on behalf of Six Feet Under. This is her second win in a row for that cable series.
