The longest-running official
Star Trek convention is docking once again at the Pasadena convention center. Creation Entertainment's 14th annual Grand Slam: The Sci-Fi Summit will take place Friday through Sunday, March 10-12, and this year will feature celebrity guests from a wide variety of genre shows in addition to
Star Trek, including
Lost, Firefly, Farscape, the "Star Wars" movies and more.
On Friday, as currently scheduled, Star Trek: Voyager fans will get to see their favorite doctor, Robert Picardo ("EMH") on stage, as well as their favorite ensign, Garrett Wang ("Harry Kim"). Aficionados of the Original will be graced by the presence of Grace Lee Whitney ("Yeoman Rand").
On Saturday, Garrett returns with castmate Tim Russ ("Tuvok") and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Chase Masterson ("Leeta") to talk about a new film called "Déjà Vu." The sci-fi short was written and directed by Russ, starring Wang and Masterson. Also on Saturday, recurring guest stars Jeffrey Combs ("Shran," "Weyoun," "Brunt," etc.) and Gary Graham ("Soval," "Tanis") will appear on the main stage together, and Wil Wheaton ("Wesley Crusher") will speak in the Little Theatre. Brent Spiner ("Data") will be present on Saturday to sign autographs and do photo ops, but will not appear on stage. According to Creation's site, though, Spiner will have a table at the convention "offering some Star Trek collectibles that he has accumulated over the years!"
Sunday will be the biggest day of the weekend, Trek-wise. Jonathan Frakes ("Commander Riker") will take the stage in the afternoon, and the weekend will climax with Avery Brooks ("Captain Sisko"). Also making a repeat appearance that day will be Alice Krige, the first and last "Borg Queen" ("Star Trek: First Contact" and "Endgame"). Ushering in the 40th anniversary of Star Trek will be the first family of Star Trek, Majel Barrett Roddenberry ("Number One," "Nurse Chapel," "Lwaxana Troi" and most ships' Computer Voice) and Eugene W. Roddenberry, Jr.
Also on Sunday, Creation will salute the real-life heroes of space with appearances from two astronauts, Captain Alan Bean and Captain Walter M. ("Wally") Schirra. Bean was the fourth person to walk on the Moon with Apollo 12, and Schirra was one of America's original Mercury Seven astronauts.
Friday night, the "Celebrity Cabaret" will feature the musical talents of Russ, Picardo and Masterson.
Throughout the weekend, the Autograph Room will feature many popular guest stars from the various incarnations of Trek, such as Suzie Plakson ("K'Ehleyr," "Female Q," etc.), Crystal Allen (Orion Slave Girl "D'Nesh"), Stephen Manley (the adolescent Spock in "Star Trek III"), Natalia Nogulich ("Admiral Nechayev"), and quite a few more.
As always, it should be noted that all guest appearances are tentative and subject to change.
Along with celebrity signings and photo ops with the fans, the convention weekend will include the usual range of activities from costume and trivia contests, auctions, behind-the-scenes presentations, and previews of upcoming sci-fi TV shows and motion pictures. A new spoof film called "Grease Trek" will be screened during the convention, in three parts, one each day.
General admission single-day tickets are $25 and are available through Ticketmaster or at the door.
