As controversial radio personality Howard Stern made his much-ballyhooed debut on Sirius Satellite Radio Monday, there were a number of surprises on the premiere show. Among them,
George Takei ("
Sulu") was introduced as the "voice" of the Howard Stern Show.
According to various news reports, Takei's familiar baritone announced the cast of the show (co-host Robin Quivers, the "Wack Pack," etc.), and then Stern revealed that Takei — the good-natured victim of many Stern-show pranks — is now the official show announcer.
Takei will be live in the studio all this week, and then afterwards he will still be the voice of the Stern show but through pre-recorded segments. Takei also hosted an on-air press conference on Monday's broadcast.
"The revolution has begun," Takei said, referring to the pay-radio forum where Stern and his cohorts can now speak uncensored.
During the show, Stern frequently referred to Takei's public revelation that he is gay (related story). According to one blog, "Takei displayed a good sense of humor as Stern probed him about his recent coming out ... and engaged in frank sexual discussions that didn't seem to throw the legendary actor."
