Last Tuesday it was reported that
William Shatner was rushed to a hospital from the set of
Boston Legal due to chronic back pain. It turns out the actual ailment was a kidney stone.
According to news reports coming out today, Shatner successfully passed the stone after experiencing excruciating pain.
"I was doing a scene [in Boston Legal] and I was feeling uncomfortable and then I got on my knees behind the scenes, before going on," said the 74-year-old actor. "And then I did the scene and I broke out into a cold sweat. I finished the scene and the nurse said, 'Maybe you should go to the hospital.'
"The purity of the pain! They had to give me morphine. It was just unbelievable pain and it made you kind of think about what pain is. It was awful."
But Shatner is apparently bouncing back quickly, as he made an appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly brandishing the offending stone in a small black bag. Plus, he reportedly will take part in a horseback riding event this weekend in Los Angeles.
According to further reports, Shatner was shocked to learn how quickly news got out of his hospital trip. "I got in the ambulance and the sirens went off. The producer tells me that he saw me off, waved goodbye, went up to his office and the phone rang and it was a tabloid. Within 30 seconds of my leaving the studio...!" he said.
Even in dire pain, his celebrity status stayed with him during his hospital visit. "I was there, shaking with pain," Shatner added. "I'm sitting in the (room) and the doctor comes up and says, 'Can I have your autograph?'"
