Still Photographer Elliott Marks Mourned

Elliott Stephen Marks, one of Hollywood's most respected still photographers who worked on three Star Trek films, passed away Wednesday, July 9, at the age of 61.

Marks was on the set of "Star Trek Generations," "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek Insurrection" shooting the images used in the publicity campaigns for those movies, including many seen on this site (click on "Slide Show" at the above links). His work is currently being seen in the campaign for Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Marks was born December 3, 1941 in Toronto, Ontario, and moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of eight. He is famous for chronicling the motion picture industry from his unique perspective as an artist, having photographed every major Hollywood actor over the course of his 25-year career. His work has been featured in books, magazines and newspapers internationally, and has been exhibited at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and at the prestigious G. Ray Hawkins Gallery. In 1996, Marks was inducted as a founding member of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers, and is the recipient of the Society of Operating Cameraman's Lifetime Achievement Award. He had just completed a photo essay book called "Perfect Mates" celebrating couples married 50 years or more, which is being readied for publication.

He is survived by his wife, son and brother. Services were held today.
