Mulgrew, Gorshin Compete for Solo Award
Kate Mulgrew ("Captain Janeway") continues to rack up kudos for her noteworthy performance as screen legend Katharine Hepburn in her one-woman off-Broadway show "Tea at Five." She has been honored by the Outer Critics Circle, an organization of writers on the New York theatre scene for out-of-town media outlets, with a nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance, according to Playbill.com.
As luck would have it, one of her competitors is another Star Trek graduate portraying another Hollywood legend. Frank Gorshin, the memorable "Bele" in "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," is vying in the same category for his turn as George Burns in "Say Goodnight Gracie."
The winners of this year's Outer Critics Circle Awards will be announced May 5, and will be presented at a Gala Awards Party on May 29 at Sardi's Restaurant in New York.
Earlier this month Mulgrew was also nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award (related story). More information about these awards, including links to pictures, is available at the Totally Kate! Web site.
Vote for Kirsten
Speaking of awards, you can take the opportunity to cast your own ballots in such categories as "Best Kiss" by visiting the 2003 MTV Movie Awards site. Show your support for Star Trek alums by voting for Kirsten Dunst in the categories Best Female Performance and Best Kiss (the latter with Tobey Maguire), both for her role as the superhero's love interest in "Spider-Man." Dunst became part of the Trek family when she appeared as a child in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Dark Page" as "Hedril."
The MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast on June 5 on, of course, MTV.
Picardo in Sabrina Finale
Thursday night (the 24th), try to catch Mulgrew's Star Trek: Voyager castmate Robert Picardo ("The Doctor") in the final hurrah of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, on the WB network. The final two half-hour episodes of the family comedy will run back-to-back starting at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, after seven years on the air. Picardo plays the father of the title character, played by Melissa Joan Hart, and will be giving her away at her wedding. This has been a recurring role for Picardo, which conveniently has brought him back to the Paramount lot to work mere steps away from his former haunt of the Star Trek soundstages.
Also featured in the Sabrina finale is another Voyager alum, Patrick Kerr, as the minister at the wedding. Kerr played a Bothan in "Persistence of Vision."
Alexander, Larroquette Begin New Projects
Jason Alexander ("Kurros" in Voyager's "Think Tank") has hit the boards in San Francisco to co-star with Martin Short in "The Producers," the classic Mel Brooks movie-turned-stage musical. The show opened this week at the Orpheum, and will head south in a few weeks to begin a lengthy run at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles beginning May 29. Alexander has committed to star in the show through January of next year.
John Larroquette ("Maltz" in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock") is also starring in a new project, a TV sitcom called "Happy Family." The pilot episode was filmed Monday night, and is targeted to premiere in September on NBC. "Happy Family" is about a couple who try to enjoy life as "empty-nesters," except their children keep coming back to the roost. The comedy also stars Susan Gibney, who has played two parts in Star Trek: "Leah Brahms" in two episodes of TNG, and "Erika Benteen" in two episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
