Did You See... the Vulcan on Buffy?

Now that geeky former bad guy Andrew (Tom Lenk) has taken up residence at Buffy the Vampire Slayer's house, we can count on him for reference every once in a while. Last night's episode, "Dirty Girls," featured what may be Buffy's most elaborate Trek reference to date.

The episode has bad girl Slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku) returning to Sunnydale after a long absence (and a stint in prison). As Buffy is currently housing a whole host of potential Slayers, Andrew takes it upon himself to explain Faith's checkered past. As a montage of scenes from previous Faith episodes plays out onscreen, Andrew spins a tale of Faith, "the dark Slayer."

"She became a cold-blooded killer," he intones. "Nobody was immune to her trail of destruction. Not friends, not family, not even the most pacifist and logical of races ..."

Suddenly, the montage cuts to a scene we've never seen before, wherein Faith is battling an individual with pointed ears, a familiar black, bowl-like haircut, and a blue shirt. As a rumbling tune that sound suspiciously like vintage Original Series fight music plays, Faith and the pointy-eared alien duke it out. At one point, he even attempts to deliver a deadly nerve pinch.

In the midst of this intense fight, one of the potential Slayers, Amanda (Sarah Hagan), interrupts: "What the hell are you talking about? I thought Faith killed a volcanologist."

Responds the clueless Andrew: "Silly, silly Amanda. Why would Faith kill a person who studies Vulcans?"
