A film series tribute to Robert Wise taking place in Hollywood over the next week will include a screening of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" Saturday night, with actors George Takei ("Sulu") and Majel Barrett ("Nurse Chapel" and widow of the late Gene Roddenberry) appearing in person.
The American Cinematheque is holding public screenings of movies directed by Wise starting tonight (Thursday) with "The Sound of Music," at the renovated Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Wise himself is slated to speak afterwards (schedule permitting). Friday night, the triple bill will be "The Set-Up" (1949), "The Haunting" (1963) and "Odds Against Tomorrow" (1959).
Saturday, the evening begins with Wise's science fiction classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) at 5:00, then "ST:TMP" screens at 7:45. Takei and Barrett will speak afterwards, and they will be joined by the movie's cinematographer, Richard H. Kline, A.S.C. The night closes out with another Wise sci-fi classic, "The Andromeda Strain" (1971).
The series concludes next Wednesday with "I Want to Live!" (1958).
General admission tickets are $9 and can be bought in advance. More information can be found at the "Tribute to Robert Wise" page at the American Cinematheque site.
