Robert Picardo's
latest stint in the theater is earning him some much-deserved praise. Recent issues of
The Hollywood Reporter and
Variety contain favorable reviews of "On the 20th Century," which is now running as part of the "REPRISE! Broadway's Best" program at UCLA's Freud Playhouse.
The Variety review praises the play for capturing the "zany, staccato rhythm of 1930s screwball comedy." It also singles out several of the performers, including Picardo and fellow Trek alum Dan Butler (Steth in the Voyager episode "Vis a Vis"). In the play, Butler and Picardo play Owen O'Malley and Oliver Webb, faithful sidekicks to producer Oscar Jaffee (Bob Gunton), and reviewer Joel Hirschhorn notes that the duo displays exceptional chemistry. "Best of all are Butler and Picardo, a terrific comedy team, interplaying so skillfully that they deserve a vehicle entirely their own," he writes.
Hirschhorn also has kind words Gunton, who is familiar to Trek fans for his portrayal of Captain Benjamin Maxwell in TNG's "The Wounded." "For this show to soar, it needs a hilariously hammy, larger-than-life central portrayal, and as Oscar Jaffee, Bob Gunton comes through strongly, every inch an egotistical producer with a monstrously inflated ego," he writes.
The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, refers to Butler and Picardo as "talented" and Gunton as "wonderful." "Above all, 'On the 20th Century' is a classy, smart, funny show that is totally rewarding," notes the review.
"On the 20th Century" closes February 2, so if you haven't yet observed Picardo displaying his musical talents, now's your chance. For more information, tickets and reservations, either call the box office at (310) 825-2101 or on their Web site via the link below.
