Artist Al Hirschfeld, whose famed portfolio of celebrity caricatures included many Star Trek characters, died Monday at his home in New York just five months shy of this 100th birthday.
Light Speed Fine Art, a distributor of science fiction-oriented art and collectibles, has posted a tribute to Hirschfeld which shows his caricatures of each Star Trek cast through Voyager at this link.
Hirschfeld's spare yet incisive drawings captured the essence and memorialized the stardom of hundreds of Broadway and Hollywood performers over eight decades. "To be the subject of a Hirschfeld drawing endowed one with a special cachet," writes The New York Times. "To find the word 'Nina,' the name of his daughter, hidden several times in the lines of his caricatures, was a weekend pastime for millions of readers."
