Veteran Actor and TOS Alum James Gregory Remembered

Star Trek alum James Gregory, one of film and television's more familiar character actors with a career spanning nearly half a century, passed away Monday at age 90.

Appearing in the TOS episode "Dagger of the Mind" as Dr. Tristan Adams, Gregory was also well known for playing Inspector Frank Luger on the classic comedy Barney Miller.

Beginning in the late 1940's and working steadily into the 1980's, Gregory played all kinds of roles but found a niche portraying cops, military men and politicians. Some film highlights include roles in "The Manchurian Candidate," "PT 109," "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," "Clambake" and "The Main Event."

On the small screen, Gregory's credits include appearances during television's infancy on programs such as The Philco Television Playhouse, Kraft Television Theatre, Studio One, You Are There and Playhouse 90. He continued to work regularly through the 1950's on programs such as The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Rawhide, The Virginian and Ben Casey. In the 1960's he was seen on comedies such as Hogan's Heroes, F Troop and My Three Sons, westerns such as Bonanza, The Wild, Wild West and The Big Valley as well as police dramas like The F.B.I., Ironside and Hawaii Five-O.

In the 1970's he made appearances on such classic shows as Night Gallery, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Police Story, Emergency! and M*A*S*H, as well as his aforementioned recurring role on Barney Miller.

He retired from acting in 1983 and passed away of natural causes in Sedona, Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 58 years.
