Jeff Corey – "Plasus" – Remembered

Jeff Corey, a prolific actor who survived being blacklisted in the 1950's and went on to teach many of Hollywood's elite including Leonard Nimoy, has died at the age of 88.

Among Corey's voluminous credits in film and TV is the role of "Plasus" in the Original Series episode "The Cloud Minders." He has also made several appearances in Babylon 5 and provided a voice to the animated Spider-Man in 1994, but is perhaps best-known for roles on the TV sitcoms One Day at a Time and Night Court, and in the films "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "In Cold Blood" and "Little Big Man."

Corey died Friday morning at St. John's Medical Center in Santa Monica of complications from a fall earlier in the week at his home in Malibu, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Corey was blacklisted in 1951 for refusing to name names before Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee, and didn't work again as an actor in Hollywood for more than a decade. But when he was talked into teaching, he became the most sought-after acting coach in Hollywood by the mid-1950's. Studios that would not hire Corey as an actor because of the blacklist actively sent their young talent to study with him.

Besides Nimoy, Corey's other prominent students included James Dean, Anthony Perkins, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Robin Williams, Rob Reiner, Penny Marshall, Carol Burnett and a young Jack Nicholson.
