Matt Jefferies, the production designer who created the original
U.S.S. Enterprise, was honored last weekend with the opening of a new hospital wing in his and his wife's name.
The Matt & Mary Ann Jefferies Rehab Unit was dedicated Saturday at the Motion Picture & Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. The hospital, run by the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), serves the health care needs of entertainment industry professionals and their families, and the new wing will provide physical therapy services. The dedication ceremony took place with a small, intimate crowd consisting mostly of family and friends of the couple. That included Matt's brother John Jefferies and fellow production designer Harold Michelson, who worked on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
Herb Solow, the executive in charge of production on the Original Series, gave opening remarks, after which the new wing was dedicated by the MPTF President/CEO David Tillman, M.D. The new wing was then formally unveiled by the Jefferies. Harrison (Yvonne) Solow, Herb's wife, gave closing remarks.
"They paid me quite an honor, and they did it in thanks for the things I've done for the hospital," Jefferies told STARTREK.COM. He has made frequent contributions to the Fund because, "I worked in the industry, and they've got a marvelous health program."
