"A Class Act," featuring
Robert Picardo's central portrayal of "A Chorus Line" lyricist Edward Kleban (see earlier story
here), seems to have made a lasting impression on Los Angeles Times reviewer Lewis Segal. In today's review of the Pasadena Playhouse production, Segal claimed the actor was "superb." The biographical play, focusing on the backstage goings on of Kleban and others involved in the production of the legendary "A Chorus Line" moved the reviewer to focus on Picardo's performance, one that is "not only deftly ironic and believably complex in the role but someone you believe could actually have written the spectacular Kleban lyrics we hear all evening."
For those of you who loved Picardo's singing on Star Trek: Voyager, then you are in for a treat as the good Doctor gets to sing his heart out on stage. "The music is great, and I sing fifteen songs (twice as much as I sang in seven years of Voyager) in each performance. I truly believe any fan of the Doctor and/or Robert Picardo would get a huge charge out of seeing the play," said Picardo in a recent chat with STARTREK.COM.
Of the production and being back on stage, Picardo is resolutely upbeat. "I am having the time of my life," said the actor.
Playing Edward Kleban represented a particular challenge for the actor. "He was a brilliant, phobic, funny and utterly impossible personality."
Segal's review finishes with the kind admonition: "God keep him [Picardo] safe and well at least until June 16." And beyond, we hope.
"A Class Act" runs till June 16, at the Pasadena Playhouse. For more information, please check the link below.
