The big news in Hollywood today is the Oscar nominations and the impressive showing of "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings" with the most, 13. But while
Star Trek was not mentioned by name in the nomination list, its presence was felt in several technical and musical categories.
Diane Warren adds to her string of recognitions by earning a nomination in the Original Song category for writing "There You'll Be" from the movie "Pearl Harbor." This is her sixth Oscar nomination. Warren wrote "Faith of the Heart" which is performed by Russell Watson every Wednesday night at the top of Enterprise.
In the other musical category, Original Score, James Horner grabbed his eighth nomination for his soundtrack to "A Beautiful Mind." Horner provided the score for "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." He won two Oscars in 1998 for "Titanic."
All three films nominated in the Visual Effects category have Star Trek movie veterans in contention. Jim Rygiel is one of the four nominees for "Lord of the Rings" he was visual effects supervisor for "Star Trek: Insurrection." The nominees from "Pearl Harbor" include Ed Hirsch and Ben Snow Hirsch was Industrial Light & Magic's production manager on "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," plus he stage managed the miniature crash sequence in "Star Trek Generations"; Snow also worked on "Generations" as a computer graphics artist. Scott Farrar and Michael Lantieri were among those recognized for "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" Farrar did visual effects on "ST II," "ST III" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"; Lantieri contributed to the special effects on "ST IV." Farrar won an Oscar in 1986 for "Cocoon"; ditto Lantieri, in 1994 for "Jurassic Park."
In Sound Editing, George Watters II is a nominee for "Pearl Harbor." Watters was a sound editor on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "ST II," "ST III" and "ST VI." For "ST VI" Watters was nominated in 1992 for Sound Effects Editing. In all he's had six nominations, and he took the gold in 1991 for "Hunt for Red October."
In Makeup, Greg Cannom is up for "A Beautiful Mind." Cannom is credited with creating the "Jackal Mastiff" (or "special alien dog makeup") in "ST VI." This is his eighth nomination and he's won twice, in 1993 for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and 1994 for "Mrs. Doubtfire."
In other Oscar news we can brag about, it was announced today that Kirsten Dunst will make her first appearance at the Academy Awards® as a presenter. Dunst played "Hedril" in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Dark Page."
The 74th Annual Academy Awards will take place Sunday, March 24, in ceremonies hosted by Whoopi Goldberg at the new Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The event will air live on ABC.
