Actress Meg Wyllie, the first guest star cast by Gene Roddenberry to portray an alien villain in the Star Trek universe, has passed away. She died January 1 in Glendale, California, at the age of 84, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wyllie was "The Keeper," the throbbing-headed Talosian who used powers of illusion to try to imprison Captain Christopher Pike, James Kirk's predecessor, in a zoo. She played her part in the original pilot for Star Trek, "The Cage," which was shot in December 1964. That pilot, starring the late Jeffrey Hunter, was never actually aired during the Original Series run, but its footage was repurposed in 1966 for the two part episode "The Menagerie."
Wyllie had a 50-year career in television character roles, accumulating nearly 100 credits in the cast of or as a guest star on such television shows as Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mister Ed, The Addams Family, The Fugitive, Batman, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Family Ties, and many others, including multiple appearances on Mad About You and General Hospital.
She is also remembered for her devotion to the Pasadena Playhouse, a theatre company in California.
